Petrel Reservoir Engineering - RILS (Remote Instructor Led Series), Series 3

This is a Remote Instructor Led Series (RILS) training. The remote classroom delivery is a modality that takes advantage of the instructor led training content, while allowing the same content to be delivered remotely. All training sessions will be delivered online with no face-to-face classroom attendance.

This course introduces reservoir engineers and asset teams to the interactive Petrel reservoir engineering tools to construct and manage simulation models.

The complete course consists of 3 series:

This is Series 3 and will be delivered in three (3) sessions lasting ~ four (4) Hours each. An intensive agenda also implies a homework after each session. Hence full-time commitment is expected from participants.

In this series Grid building options for well centric models (simple grid, tartan grids, local grids, sector models) and global simulation models (pillar grids and structural grids, upscaling) are discussed.

A simulation case study is given at the end of the course to apply most of what you have learned during this course in a more realistic scenario.

The hands-on exercises are structured to enable the trainee apply the software skills obtained during training and cover most of the Petrel simulation workflows. Overall, pre-processing and post-processing of simulation data will be done within the Petrel environment.

Each participants will need the following to successfully attend the course:

    1. Windows-based PC*
    2. USB Headset
    3. Internet Access capable for 720HD video-streaming
    4. Second monitor or tablet (highly recommended)
    5. Webcam (highly recommended)

*Hands-on exercises will be performed using locally installed Petrel and Eclipse software; hence client machine must satisfy min. requirements. Alternatively, practical sessions can be accessed through DELFI Cloud Environment (subject to availability).

    Day 1

    Grids for well-based studies:

    • Local grid refinement
    • Simple and tartan grids

Many reservoir engineering studies focus on localized regions of a reservoir around a well or group of wells. Examples are well placement, completion optimization, and workover planning studies. In this module, you learn how to build efficient well-centric simulation models. You learn how to build a separate simple grid for simulation, refine the original model resolution around the wells of interest, and speed up simulation for the local region of interest by using a sector model.

    Day 2
    • Build a simulation grid from a fine geological grid
    • Quality control of coarsened grids
    • Creating completion items in wells using the automated and manual well completion design tools
    • Upscaling reservoir properties

This training introduces you to the process of coarsening a fine scale grid. You learn about vertical subdivision using the Scale up structure functionality and you are introduced to the Structural gridding process used for constructing a full stair-step grid from structural frameworks. After the upgridding process, you use the Geometrical modeling functionality to quality check the coarse grid by generating coarse grid properties, such as grid cell volumes, cell inside-out, and cell angles. You also upscale the properties from the fine grid onto the coarser simulation grid using the Scale up properties functionality.

    Day 3
    • Simulation study challenge
    • Screen alternative production extension strategies
    • Optimize chosen concept
    • Quantify sensitivities to model uncertainty

The goal of the simulation study exercises is to give you the opportunity to apply most of what you have learned during this course in a more realistic scenario. Each exercise contains a description of the scenario and the main steps. The idea is to let you solve the designed scenario tasks by yourself. Few tips are given in each exercise to encourage you to find your own way to complete the task.

Development and exploration petroleum engineers, reservoir engineers and geoscientists.

    • Well-centric reservoir models
    • Upscaling and Advanced Corner Point Grid
    • Simulation study exercise

General knowledge of reservoir engineering, and/or petroleum geology and geophysics.

Attendees must complete Series 1 and Series 2 of Petrel Reservoir Engineering - RILS or be proficient with the corresponding workflows.

Payment can be made either online using credit card / PayPal link / Bank transfer or Purchase Order
