This is a Remote Instructor Led Series (RILS) training. The remote classroom delivery is a modality that takes advantage of the instructor led training content, while allowing the same content to be delivered remotely. All training sessions will be delivered online with no face-to-face classroom attendance.
This course introduces reservoir engineers and subsurface consultants to some basic concepts in geomechanics and the Petrel Geomechanics and VISAGE software products.
Apart from introducing the concepts of reservoir geomechanics, this training discusses the types of data used for geomechanical modeling in the petroleum industry, along with some of the geomechanical effects observed in oil and gas reservoirs and the subsurface during hydrocarbon production. The course shows how to create geomechanics reservoir models that provide insights into the pre-production in-situ stress field, as well as the geomechanics behavior observed as stress, strain and displacement results when coupling with reservoir flow models, and how to plot and visualize the geomechanical effects over time.
The training is structured to show you how to perform the following tasks:
In addition, the training includes the execution of wellbore stability analysis within the 3D geomechanical model to optimize drilling trajectories and the safe mud weight window.
The course will be delivered in a series of sessions, 4 hours each. An intensive agenda also implies a homework after each session. Hence full-time commitment is expected from participants.
Each student will need the following to attend:
*Hands-on exercises will be performed using locally installed Petrel and Eclipse software; hence client machine must satisfy min. requirements. Alternatively, practical sessions can be accessed through DELFI Cloud Environment (subject to availability).
Geomechanical concepts
Petrel Geomechanics Workflow
Day 2Geomechanics grids
Define materials and populate properties
Day 3Quick geomechanical insights (Quick MEM)
Pore pressure and boundary conditions
Day 4Simulation options and run simulations
Results visualization (basic geomechanical results, stress charting)
Post-processing and applications: Wellbore stability, fault and fracture stability and more (Case studies)
Reservoir Engineers and geotechnical consultants with good prior reservoir engineering and Petrel knowledge
This training assumes prior knowledge of geomechanics, rock mechanics, or mechanics in general. Recommended course: Fundamentals of Petroleum Geomechanics.
Pre-existing knowledge of oilfield operations and procedures is useful to provide context to the discussion.
