Develop measurable skills and capabilities
This course will give participants an overall understanding of the safe operation and hazards associated with drain systems found in the oil and gas industry. Drain systems are used to safely dispose of all liquids spilled, drained from equipment, or resulting from wash down activities in oil and gas processing facilities.
Participants will gain a working knowledge of the separate drainage systems including closed drains which are used for drainage water from process areas, and open drains which are used for drainage water from non-process areas. Attendees will be exposed to the environmental impact issues associated with uncontrolled contaminated surface run-off and the importance of controlling all process areas to ensure drainage water flows into the closed drainage system.
Upon completion of this course, participants will have an understanding of equipment and components associated with the systems including drainage and slop tanks and how they are designed with sufficient capacity to prevent overfilling, as well as drip trays and controls used to collect and control run-off from equipment. Storm water flow channels and collection ponds will all also be discussed.
Drain Systems Overview
On day one, participants will obtain an overall understanding of industrial drain systems, associated components, and equipment such as fire stops, catch basins, vents, and sealing requirements. System layout including network design and segregation of drainage materials will be discussed. Operating, maintenance, and safety procedures for open drain systems will also be reviewed while stressing safety and environmental compliance and concerns.
Day 2Closed Drain and Oily Water Treatment
Participants will gain an understanding of the configuration, scope, and operation of closed drainage systems on day two of this course. System activities with respect to commissioning, normal operation, emergency shut down requirements, and maintenance will also be covered. Oil recovery and drain water treatment will be discussed, paying particular attention to health, safety, and environmental compliance.
This course is mainly targeted to process technicians, process technologists, and maintenance personnel. The course can also be applicable to employees working with equipment and materials purchasing, equipment procurement, job planning, and immediate supervisors to the working technicians
Participants should have some recent exposure to oil and gas facility terminology.
