Develop measurable skills and capabilities
The course provides a comprehensive treatment of drill string design as well as the avoidance of operational problems and wear on equipment following the API recommended practices for design and operating limitations as well as the standard DS1 for design and inspection.
BHA design concepts are investigated, with emphasis on practical engineering calculations and safe operating procedures. Industry standards are used as training aids to supplement the presentation material and provide a thorough understanding of drill string components, designs, operating limits, inspection and working practices.
Steel And Submerged Tubulars
On the first day participants will have an overview of the learning objectives during the course. The day will continue on to discuss topics such as the properties of steel, Hooke's Law, and Thermal Stress. Participants will gain knowledge about axial forces and buckling in submerged tubulars, ending with a practical exercise.
Day 2Drill Stem Design, Drill Pipe Specifications and Connections
Participants will have a detail analysis of the complete manufacture of Drill Pipe process will be reviewed including conections and make up torque. During the day multiple exercises will complement the theory part.
Day 3Bottom Hole Assembly and Drillstring Dynamics
BHA components, properties, design factors and limitation including a BHA applicability in directional wells, stabilization principles and effects of stiffness, formation Dip, hole washout and WOB. The day will end with a review of drillstring dynamics.
Day 4Drill String Care and Inspection
In the final day participants will learn about types of damage which may occur during operations and handling. Detail review of tables, curves and technical data of DS-1 will be followed by fatigue design, overload cases and class exercises.
Participants should be skilled in both drilling engineering and math. Participants must have a scientific calculator for use in the class.
