Develop measurable skills and capabilities
In facilities associated with oil and gas production, the majority of rotating equipment is driven by electric motors. This course will provide participants with the necessary knowledge to work within a mechanical maintenance team and provide a positive influence in a mechanical and technological environment.
This course will provide participants with knowledge for the construction and operation of induction, synchronous, and DC motors. A mechanical technician must be able to identify the different problems associated with electrical drivers. Thus, participants will learn the basic maintenance and troubleshooting of induction motors. Electric motor driven pumps are very common in the industry. Therefore, attendees will also learn the types of pumps available and the criteria used in the selection of electric motors to drive them.
Technicians in the petroleum industry are required to have a comprehensive knowledge of the technology related to electrical drivers, pumps, and associated equipment. Participants in this course will be better equipped to identify, repair, and maintain these systems, as well as be able to increase the knowledge within the maintenance team.
Electric Motors
Day one will focus on the basic physics behind electric motor operation. The topics covered will include construction, components, as well as the basic operation and maintenance of electric and induction motors. The participants will learn about motor speed torque performance, motor efficiency, and the inrush current characteristics of various motor designs. Routine motor testing and basic troubleshooting techniques for squirrel cage induction motor will be included. Attendees will also learn about the operating characteristics and application for synchronous motors in industrial plant. While DC motors are not very common in typical industrial plant, there are some specialized applications such as drilling where DC motors are used. Therefore, the construction and operation of DC motors and speed control will be covered on this day.
Day 2Electric Motor Driven Pumps
Basic pump theory, operation principles, and types of fluid pumps will be the focus of day two. Characteristics and applications for Rotodynamic and positive displacement pump will be discussed. Typical pump starting methods such as direct on line starting, reduced voltage starting, and pump control will be explained, as well as variable speed drives.
Day 3Motor Control Centers
On the last day, participants will learn basic motor staring circuits. This will include direct-on-line (DOL), autotransformer, and wye-delta starting circuit layouts. Motor protection schemes from basic overloads to more sophisticated motor protection will be covered. Specification and features found in typical LV and MV motor control centers will also be discussed.
This course is designed for electrical technicians, maintenance planners, and supervisors with operation and maintenance responsibilities who work in an industrial plant.
Participants taking this course should familiar with electrical installations in an industrial setting.
