Power transformers are critical pieces of equipment in an electrical power supply infrastructure. Electrical transformers serve the crucial function of transforming system voltages to higher or lower values to meet transmission, distribution, and utilization voltage level requirements. Their reliability, availability, life cycle cost, and residual life expectancy depend to a significant extent on how they are designed, built, operated, and maintained. By taking this course, participants will be provided with the necessary knowledge to demonstrate the principles for the operations and maintenance (O&M) of power transformers typically found in oil and gas industry.
This course has been designed to provide participants with an understanding of the information that is required for the proper construction, operation, and maintenance of power transformers.
Upon completion of this course participants will have a better understanding of the technology related to power transformers within the industry. Having this knowledge will help each technician develop confidence and professional enthusiasm, therefore, increasing their efficiency. The knowledge that technicians gain from this course will be further expanded by on-job training and practical experience they will receive throughout the duration of their career.
Transformer Basics
On the first day, participants will be introduced to characteristics of ideal transformers and basic transformer formulas. Operational parameters such as transformer rating, transformer losses, inrush current levels, and the various primary and secondary connections will be discussed. The participants will also learn about the operations of tap changers and instrument transformers.
Day 2Transformer Installation and Operation
The participants will be familiarized with the typical transformer installation, including grounding methods, auxiliary equipment, and transformer protection systems on the second day. Typical commissioning tests will also be explained. The effects of abnormal power conditions on the operation of transformers will be covered.
Day 3Maintenance and Transformer Asset Management
The last day of this course will focus on transformer maintenance. The participants will learn about the transformer failure modes and stresses imposed on a transformer due to both internal and external faults. They will be introduced to typical routine maintenance tests carried out on transformers and transformer auxiliary equipment. The day will conclude with the discussion of test methods used to predict transformer life expectancy.
This course is designed for electrical technicians, maintenance planners, supervisors with operation and maintenance responsibilities, and others who work in an industrial plant setting.
Participants should be familiar with electrical installations in an industrial setting.
