    Production and Test Separation Systems

Separators are typically installed immediately downstream of the wellhead and are responsible for the initial, gross separation of well fluids.  They are pressure vessels, often capable of handling fluids from high pressure wells.  The purpose of this course is to develop a working knowledge, in participants, of production separation systems and the science behind them.  Understanding the principles behind separation of gas, oil, and water is important and attendees will gain a valuable understanding of the concepts involved.

This course will explore the different types and functions of a separator.  Participants will learn about the methods used to enhance the separation process.  Additional items including the instrumentation and safety features found on production and test separators, as well as the maintenance and inspection of these devices will also be covered.

Participants will also learn about the operating production and test separators. They will learn about the internal construction and hardware features as well. The health, safety, and environmental issues associated with separators will also be discussed.

    Day 1

    Production and Test Separation Systems

    • System overview
    • Classification of oil separators
    • Primary functions of oil separators
    • Secondary functions of oil and gas separators
    • Methods used to remove gas from oil in separators

Participants will obtain a general overview of the types and function of oil separation systems found in the oil industry on day one of the course.  They will learn about the primary and secondary functions of separators, as well as how heat, agitation, and centrifugal force are used to enhance separation.

    Day 2

    Separator Control and Maintenance

    • Controls, valves, accessories
    • Safety equipment
    • Operation and maintenance considerations

On day two course participants will gain a general overview of the measuring instruments and control valves found on a separator.  They will also become familiar with the safety and control schemes used with separators and learn that they must be well maintained in order to function properly.

    Day 3

    Separator Operation

    • Separator operation
    • Separator components
    • Operating safety

Upon completion of this course, participants should have a better understanding of the technology related to the safe operation associated with oil test separators used in today’s oil production industry.  They will also learn about the separator construction and internal components that make it work.

This course is mainly targeted to process technicians, process technologists, and laboratory and maintenance personnel.  The course can also be applicable to employees working with equipment and materials purchasing, equipment procurement, job planning, as well as immediate supervisors to the working technicians.

Participants should have some recent exposure to oil and gas facility terminology.
